· Cañón del Mascarat ·
The Mascarat Canyon is the natural border between the Marina Alta and Marina Baixa regions and for centuries it was a formidable obstacle that made it necessary to make a considerable detour, making communications difficult. It was not until 1869 that the first viaduct and tunnel, now closed, were built.
The Marina Alta and Marina Baixa regions have an impressive physical border. The Barranc Salat, better known as the «Cañón del Mascarat», divides two municipalities, Altea and Calpe, and separates the Sierra de Bernia from the Morro de Toix. We are not talking about a wall, nor a road, but a huge crack in the rock.
